Bloating: Why is it happening?

Oftentimes we feel a bit too full after meals. The uneasy, tight feeling in our stomach even causes aversion to food! So why does this happen?

Bloating: What is it?

One of the common complaints, bloating occurs majorly due to intolerances to certain foods individuals may have. You may feel inflated in the abdomen. While it is not a major cause of concern, it can surely be inconvenient. Similar to other abdomen-related issues, it can cause discomfort.

Common Causes

The most common reason for bloating is the diet—what you eat on a daily basis. Without knowing, sometimes we consume food that our body cannot necessarily tolerate; specifically dairy and gluten. Some other food intolerances can be from vegetables (cabbage, Brussels sprouts, beans, asparagus), fruits (apples, pears, prunes), beans (quinoa, kidney beans), carbonated beverages, and more. Bloating can also be a result of eating too fast or too much, as you can take in excessive air in your system, which finds its way into the stomach, causing bloating. Eating a larger meal than normal causes the stomach to expand, which in turn takes longer to break down, causing bloating.

Bloating can be a result of varied things, such as excessive water retention before menstruation (for women), excessive belly fat due to excessive smoking or drinking alcohol, etc. It can also arise as a symptom of another underlying condition, especially those surrounding the gut area—constipation, bowel diseases (irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease), autoimmune diseases like celiac disease (causing gluten intolerance), or even cancer of the stomach, colon, ovaries, etc.
