In the earlier read, we have introduced you about what Panchakarma is and how it is beneficial for one’s body. Panchakarma is the purest method of detoxification, that is why we have counted it as a blissful Ayurvedic detox. To improve the circulatory system by promoting immunity, it enhances lifestyles from all aspects including spirit, mind and body. In the process of balancing the three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha; Panchakarma involves five natural procedures of body refinement, which deeply treat the body.
The detoxification is carried out through 5 procedures, namely Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya and Raktamokshana.
Vamana –
Vamana is best known therapy for kapha related diseases, such as cough and cold. If the extent of kapha is less and can be treated easily, some oral medications may come to the rescue. But if the condition worsens, it needs to be taken out of the body. And to do the same, therapists use vamana therapy. As the kapha sits at chest, the only viable way to take it out is through the mouth. Kapha should be brought to the stomach through various organs and then ejected through vomiting. It can help a person breathe freely, experience lightheadedness and good appetite. It is advised that after Vamana, it is necessary to rest and fast.
Virechana –
It is an effective therapy for diseases like jaundice and hemorrhoids. The word virechana is derived from Sanskrit, which means purgation; this therapy focuses on expelled pitta dosha out of the body. As Pitta is at intestines, so the anal is the feasible way to clear it out. After virechana patients are told to rest and avoid feeling angry or unhappy, not consuming the wrong food combination, avoid eating excess and speaking loudly.
Basti –
It is performed to treat vata dosha, and can cure diseases like constipation, kidney stones, backaches, sciatica and other types of joint pain, slipped disk, Vata headache Insomnia, Hernia, etc. After basti, a patient can feel a lightness in the abdomen.
Majorly basti can be performed in two ways:
With the help of a catheter or pipe which cleans the colon by sucking water into the anus
Without a tube, which cleans the colon by sucking air in the body. It is advised to avoid the therapy during pregnancy, menstruation, diarrhea, the same day as vamana or virechana and 3 hours after eating.
Nasya –
An ancient treatment that involves massaging the head, neck, and shoulders with the application of warm oil through the nasal passages. It helps in treating stress, memory loss, migraine, insomnia, sinusitis, and other sinus issues. Inhalation of herbal oil eliminates excess fluid in the throat, nose and head. The appropriate time to process is morning and evening. It helps improve breathing patterns and also improves eye light.
Raktamokshana –
Known as one of the essential procedures from Panchakarma, Raktamokshana is a blood purification treatment. It helps to flush out toxic substances from blood. In Sanskrit Rakta means blood, and moksha means letting go. Raktamokshana treatment helps in flushing out toxins from the blood and curing blood-borne diseases. It is beneficial to avoid curd, salt, sugar, alcohol, marijuana, citrus and sour substances before or after treatment.
These five procedures are designed to improve balance in the body and to keep one’s body free of toxins. To experience Panchakarma in Dharana, click here – Ayurvedic Detox; Panchakarma
