Ecopsychology: How nature immersion helps in regaining mind-body balance

Coined by American Scholar Theodore Roszak in 1992, Ecopsychology is traditionally defined as an ideology that believes in treating people psychologically by bringing them closer to nature, spiritually. At the centre of it lies the connection between humans and their natural environment, promoting the remedy nature provides.

City life is fast-paced and we often forget the role nature plays in healing us. Have you ever wondered why a walk in the park or a stroll on the beach makes us feel happy, content and peaceful?

Why does it give us perspective on challenges we face in the real world?

A significant amount of time is spent looking at digital screens, making us lead sedentary lives. Coupled with the ongoing pandemic, we are crippled with feelings of fear, loneliness, anxiety, stress, depressive thoughts and more. We greatly miss the time we spent outdoors, that has greatly diminished.

The Balance of Nature

Being amidst nature reduces negative thoughts. Exposure to the environment impacts mental well-being positively, as we pause and rethink, becoming mindful of our surroundings. Being close to nature improves our mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing. Studies have said those who exercise and spend time outdoors are less fatigued and create less stress hormones; additionally, eyesight problems, bowel disorders and heart conditions are also kept in check. Psychologically, there are numerous cognitive benefits of nature – it improves memory functions, uplifts mood helps those suffering from depression and other unpleasant feelings, instead replacing them with positive feelings of motivation and happiness. Being outdoors reduces the stress hormone cortisol. It builds our focus and attention. Spiritually, the human-nature connect aids us in refocusing energy, making us grateful for what we have. Breathing in nature makes us cognizant of our surroundings.

Our natural affinity towards nature is deeply rooted in evolution. Dharana Wellness Centre, a wellness retreat near Mumbai, is nestled amidst the magnificent landscape of the Sahyadris.
