Sustainable Living. Today
Dharana at Shillim serves a responsibility to the region, to the valley and to the community at Shillim. Set in a protected 2,500 acres of Forest Land, the retreat takes forth the philosophy of ‘Conserve, Sustain and Heal’ to newer, more practised dimensions.
Ensuring the growth and healing of the local ecosystems, flora and fauna, Dharana Shillim, along with the Shillim Institute, implements various measures to have a positive and lasting impact on the region.
From novel methods to reduce emissions to completely cutting out non-biodegradable waste from the valley, Dharana at Shillim is a bastion of modern, carbon-neutral, conscious travel.

Conservation
While distanced from any urban area, the Western Ghats are still a sensitive ecosystem, susceptible to deforestation and harm to the local flora and fauna. Torrential rain, especially in previously deforested areas results in severe soil erosion, further damaging the balance of the ecosystem.
As such, conservation efforts have had an important impact on the protection of the valley.
Undertaking conservation measures has thus become a key undertaking at the valley. So far, the Shillim Institute has planted more than 100,000 plants and trees. Local species, which thrive in the Shillim Valley, have provided instrumental growth and reforestation.

Sustainablity
Sustainability has been interwoven with Dharana at Shillim since the very beginning. When concepts such as sustainability were starting to get mainstream attention, the retreat had already implemented and pioneered practices such as reforestation, sustainable stormwater management, gray water recycling, and more.
Today, a considerable 500 KW Solar Farm caters to about 70% of the retreat’s power requirements. Almost 50% of water requirements are fulfilled by rainwater harvesting. Additionally, 100% of food waste is converted to compost, utilized in the in-house organic plantation efforts and landscaping.

Healing
Healing at Dharana Shillim not only involves the mind, body and spirit but also the valley itself. With close proximity to the Shillimb Village, home to the community at the valley, the retreat strives towards a positive social impact.
The retreat employs many from the local community for the security and protection of the Shillim estate, thwarting slash-and-burn and poaching.
As a further step, the staff at the retreat undertake voluntary community work at the Shillimb Village and ‘Sampark Bal Asha Ghar’, an orphanage situated in the valley.
